4 Reason’s Why You Should Eat Slowly

In this fast-paced world that we live in it’s easy for our lives to feel like they’re getting away from us. With work, taking care of a family, extracurricular activities, working out, and whatever else seems to make your week fly by it can be hard to slow down, especially to eat. But making a conscientious effort to eat slowly is necessary not only to achieve balance, but also for your health. Here are 4 reason’s why you should take the time to eat slowly.

1. Your digestive system will thank you!

If you’re wolfing down food in a hurry, you’re likely not chewing it properly. When you don’t chew your food properly, it doesn’t breakdown; which can burden your digestive system, leading to slow or impaired digestion. For more on how you can chew your way to better digestion, check out this article.

2. You will enjoy your meals more

Research shows that you absorb more nutrients when you eat slowly. So it’s important that you take the time to sit down and just eat the food in front of you. This means no TV, computer or phone while eating. Instead sit down with a friend or family member, or just eat by yourself.

3. You will eat less

When we are mindful and aware of what we’re eating we are able to acknowledge when we are full, and stop eating before we get too full. It typically takes the brain about 20 minutes to realize that it’s full, so slow down, take the time to chew properly and breathe between each bite.

4. You will burn calories

If you eat slowly and double the amount of time it takes you to chew your food you can increase your caloric burn by up to 30%!
