The Every Morning Smoothie

As a nutritionist this is really hard for me to admit, but… I’m not actually a breakfast person. I know, I know, that’s like a baker telling you that they don’t eat bread, but it’s true. Though I don’t start every morning with a steaming bowl oatmeal or eggs on avocado toast, I do have a morning routine that includes one hell of a smoothie – which I will get to in a minute.

Before I bust out my blender, I start my day by oil pulling for about 20-minutes – which helps whiten your teeth, remove toxins from the body, and kill mouth bacteria. After that I have a glass of warm lemon water (which helps get your digestive system going and gently cleanses your body) or turmeric and lemon tea (which helps to boost the immune system and is super comforting in the winter months). Following that I’m usually racing around trying to get myself and my kids ready for the day. It can be a little hectic, and leave me little time to think of food. Once I drop my kids off at school however, I finally start feeling hungry… which is my cue to blend up a smoothie.

Here’s my go-to recipe. Hope you like it as much as I do!

My Every Morning Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients

1 banana

1/2 cup frozen fruit of your choice **I usually use organic raspberries, mangos or strawberries… if I can get them without paying a fortune. I love frozen organic strawberries

1 scoop of sprouted brown rice protein powder **Whether you choose whey, brown rice or hemp, find a clean protein powder with only 1 or 2 ingredients

2 tablespoons of chia seeds **A great source of Omega 3s!

1 handful of spinach or kale

1 tablespoon of Vega Antioxidant Oil Blend

1 teaspoon turmeric powder **Great for fighting inflammation and an incredible superfood

1 teaspoon of Maca powder **Maca is a complex, nutrient-dense superfood that contains loads of vitamins, amino acids, plant sterols, essential minerals and fatty acids. It fights stress fighting adaptogen, can increase stamina, boost libido and combat fatigue! Hence why I have it in the AM. ????

1 scoop of greens powder **I like the Living Fit brand that we carry at BIM

Enough water to blend

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Serve immediately.

Note: If you’re not using blueberries then you can make this smoothie the night before. Blueberries have a natural gelling quality so when they sit for a while your smoothie will look like jelly… which is kind of yuck in my opinion!
